ST. MICHAEL, C/12

Reni's painting of Saint Michael the Archangel (1636) embodies the Roman Catholic teaching that he is the supreme enemy of Satan and the fallen angels. As protector of the Church, Saint Michael defeated Satan and drove him out of heaven. Reni depicts a victorious Saint Michael wielding a sword as Satan, or a fallen angel, struggles helplessly below his foot. Despite the dramatic imagery, there is a softness of form and color particularly embodied in Reni's rendering of Saint Michael.

Reni's painting is housed inside a chapel at Santa Maria della Concezione dei Cappuccini church in Rome. A mosaic of the same painting can also be found  inside St. Peter's Basilica at the Vatican.
