Our Lady of Guadalupe, or the Virgin Mary, one of Roman Catholicism's most recognizable icons, but she has also played an important role in Mexico's religious and national history. According to early accounts, the Virgin Mary appeared before an indigenous convert named Juan Diego at Mexico's Tepeyac Hill in 1531 and requested that a shrine be built in her honor at that very site. Juan Diego recounted this meeting to his bishop, who then told him to return to Mary and ask for a sign to prove her identity. She instructed Juan Diego to gather roses, which she then arranged inside his tilma cloak. When Juan Diego opened his cloak before the bishop, the flowers fell to the floor and in their place was an image of the Virgin Mary imprinted inside on the fabric.
